October has arrived, and Halloween is just around the corner! For your kids, that means it’s time for fun costumes, trick or treating and loads of store-bought Halloween candy. We here at Morrison Dental Group in Midlothian, VA, know that it can be a challenge to help your family’s mouths stay healthy around Halloween. We support you having a fun time, and that includes eating candy. But it’s important to have a plan. Here’s some advice:

-It’s all about the timing: After your children bring home their candy, keep their bags in a special place and let them know that they can pick out one or two special treats to eat with their lunch and/or dinner. The bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and produce acid as a byproduct, which can harm teeth. However, if they eat sugary treats with a meal, the other more savory kinds of foods can help to cancel out the acids created from the sugar.

-Keep up on oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day and floss every evening and encourage your children to do the same.

-Give out sugarless gum: After you or your children eat candy, pop in pieces of sugarless gum to chew for 20 minutes or so. Chewing gum will invite salivary glands to go to work washing away bad bacteria and leftover food particles. You can even hand out sugarless gum to trick-or-treaters on Halloween to help other parents and their kids.

Another thing that will help is to take a trip to the dentist, especially if anyone in the family is due for a cleaning. Call 804-639-7500 to make an appointment to see us in Midlothian, VA. We’re here to make you smile.
